Health & Safety

Lancashire Landscapes is a responsible company which carries out all work with careful regard to the health and safety of both our employees and those around us.

We ensure that a strong health and safety culture is embedded within the workforce and have safety systems which specifically reflect the nature of our work and encompass both the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and continually changing safety legislation introduced thereafter. Our experience of health and safety is that an ability to ‘talk the talk’ does not necessarily ensure that a health and safety culture exists at grass roots level. Consequently, as the company has continued to grow, we have developed set of health and safety procedures which are effective, straightforward, easy to understand and easy to enforce. Our commitment to health and safety is demonstrated by our membership of two of the UK’s leading health and safety accreditation schemes: SAFEcontractor operated by Connaught Compliance Services (previously National Britannia) and ContractorPlus operated by Safety Management and Monitoring Services. Membership of these schemes ensures that we have effective health and safety management and satisfy the qualifications set by many of the UK’s major employers.

In brief, our comprehensive Health and Safety package includes:

  • Insurance: £10 million of Employers Liability insurance and £5 million of public and products liability insurance.
  • Policy: A comprehensive health and safety policy.
  • Waste management: Registration with the Environment Agency as a carrier of controlled waste
  • CRB checks: Full background checks on staff through the Criminal Records Bureau.
  • Safe systems of work: We provide job specific risk assessments, method statements and, where required, COOSH assessments for all operational activities.
  • Staff training: Where required for certain types of work (e.g. application of pesticides, use of chainsaws), our staff are appropriately qualified through the National Proficiency Test Council. The company also runs its own comprehensive staff training scheme which includes an induction training session for all new employees.
  • Staff consultation: The Directors and staff members hold regular team meetings during which employees on all levels are encouraged to voice their opinions on any health and safety issues in the workplace and help develop systems for improvement.
  • Director review: As a follow-on to staff consultation, the company directors regularly review health and safety procedures and introduce improvements where required.
  • Supervision: Each team on every site has an appointed supervisor who speaks directly to the Directors and ensures that all safety procedures are strictly implemented.
  • Plant and equipment: All tools and machinery receive regular maintenance checks to ensure they are safe to use.
  • Personal protective equipment: All necessary safety workwear is provided free of charge to staff members and replaced free of charge when necessary.
  • Relevant accreditations: The company is affiliated to both the SAFEcontractor scheme operated by Connaught Compliance Services (previously National Britannia) and the ContractorPlus scheme operated by Safety Management and Monitoring Services.
